Benjamin Franklin had a lot of inventions. The rocking chair, bifocals, swim fins, the Franklin stove, etc. But one of his most famous was the lightning rod. The lightning rod is a long piece of metal that is hooked up to the side of a house or building. Its purpose is to store electricity when it is struck by lightning during a storm. The stored electricity would act as a generator for the appliances people have in their houses or buildings. The idea that led Benjamin Franklin to this invention was his experiment, the “Kite and Key”. It was a stormy night and Benjamin Franklin decided to put together a kite.
