Benjamin Franklin
Benjamin Franklin: The Scientist Aside from being one of the presidents of the United States of America, Benjamin Franklin was also an outstanding scientist. He challenged what scientists during his time had thought and was an innovator in the field of science. Franklin’s ideas included there being one fluid that could have either a negative or positive charge and could transfer electricity from one object to another, which went against the main theory at the time about there being two fluids that met and cancelled out one another. He also sought to prove the idea of the same electricity he had in his shop being the same electricity that was in lightning bolts. He proved this idea to …show more content…
The key sparked and proved that his ideas were correct about electricity being able to transfer over and that the same electricity he dealt with every day was the same as the lightning bolts that came from the clouds. Franklin wanted to find a practical use for his newfound knowledge and that led to him inventing the lightning rod. The lightning rod was a pointed metal rod that was bolted to the top of a roof and had a wire running down from it to the ground. It would direct a lightning bolt away from a building and onto the ground. Franklin’s scientific successes evoked interest in other scientist worldwide and he ultimately created essential stepping stones for future scientists of all generations to take what he knew and invented and create even more. This also contributed to the cultural identity of the United States because it showed that Americans were innovators and
