The Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin When thinking about Benjamin Franklin the first thing that comes to mind is a man flying a kite with the key at the end of it, trying to discover electricity. He was best known as a founding father, inventor, scientist, politician, author, and a printer in his lifetime. He became so well rounded due to reading books from philosophers and reading about humanism. Understanding his accomplishments and how he lived his life are what were captured in his autobiography. Benjamin Franklin was born “from poverty and obscurity” (Franklin, 5) in Boston in 1706 lived until 1790 passing away in Philadelphia. I feel he has a right to be a founding father due to all he has done for society. Such as in his autobiography he discusses the open stove invention, he says “In 1742, invented an open stove for the better warming of rooms, and at the same time saving fuel, as the fresh air admitted was warmed in entering”(Franklin, 67). Some other inventions that Benjamin Franklin invented were the bifocals, which are glasses that are split in half to see near and far sided objects, also the odometer was invented, when one day Mr. Franklin had curiosity of the speed of a carriage. The lightening rod was created once he fully understood the concept of lightening, and started to experiment with electricity. Later on in his years Benjamin Franklin founded and developed a few institutions. Such as opening libraries and hospitals he was able to do this because, he was educated and one thing he believed in was self-improvement which increased his care for education of others. I also like how he discusses when the governor acknowledged him he explains, “The Governor treated me with great Civility, show'd me his Library, which was a very large one, and we had a good deal of Conversation about Books and Authors. This was the second Governor who had done me the Honor to take Notice of me, which to a poor Boy like me was very pleasing” (Franklin, 21). This shows how he starts to understand how
