Before any of these great accomplishments made by Franklin, he was just like any ordinary child. He was born on January 17th, 1706 as the tenth child to soap maker Josiah Franklin and his wife Abiah Folger. Franklin did so well with this job that the governor of Pennsylvania promised that he would set Franklin up with his own business if he would travel to London to acquire fonts and printing equipment. Once he arrived in London, the governor went back on his promise forcing Franklin to stay in England longer than he expected. Upon returning to Philadelphia, Franklin tried helping to run a shop but before long returned back to being a printer's helper.
