Benefits Of XP Math

XP Math is a site that includes free math games that are aligned to go with the Common Core State Standards. Many of the math games are based on themes kids enjoy, such as sports, T.V. game shows and video games (Star Wars, Minecraft, etc.) Teachers can easily utilize XP Math directly in their own classrooms. To support teachers, the Common Core Standards are in place and act as alignment guides for different grade levels. XP Math is a good place to find math games, math videos, math worksheets, and math e-books for teachers. The games section of XP Math offers games for basic arithmetic, algebra, geometry, and probability. Although I believe that some of the activities are a more effective mean of reinforcement. Therefore, I think that the activity titled “solving two-step equations” would be the perfect activity for reinforcement. Not only does it give you the opportunity to work the problem out on your own, it shows you your mistakes, so that you know how to correctly work out the problem next time. This type activity provides the students with practice, reasoning and answers. This site can also be used as a means of remediation. Remediation focuses on teaching a topic in an alternative way. XP Math reinforces material, while teaching it to students in a different more accommodating way. For example in the activity titled “roll back number line” it shows the children the many alternatives of how you can express your answer. I think this site would be a good practice for ELL students. Being that there isn't much language on the site, I think this site would be most effective for them to use a source of trial and error. ELL students will be able to complete activities and have the correct answers and reasoning’s displayed for them after they have completed the activity. Additionally, after working in a special education classroom, I am confident in saying that XP Math would have also been an extremely useful educational mean for the students of that population. It is engaging and proses as something “fun” while still being education. Having them be hands on with their learning is essential for them to acquire knowledge. Like most students, they thrive off of winning or in this particular instance, having answered the questions correctly. Therefore this is a great educational tool to have them use a means of reinforcement and

Paper Plate Fractions: The Counting Connection by Ann McCoy, Joan Barnett, and Tammy Stine was an article that I had enjoyed reading. Other important ideas about the content that I have learned are fractions, iterations, and the mathematical teaching practices.…

Some ELLs have a higher English proficiency than others, so it would not be beneficial for them to be working on the same activities. Students get to learn everything from math, sight words, phonics, writing, language, vocabulary, spelling, and various reading activities at their own levels. Multicultural education is also about cultural awareness and social justice (Bennett, 2014). This site offers the opportunity to learn social studies. On the day of Shelby and I’s presentation I was excited to share our fun and interactive math activity with my classmates. We incorporated a lot of SIOP strategies that were explicitly shown in our slides throughout the whole presentation. It was extremely helpful to receive feedback from our peers about other ideas, strengths and weaknesses in our lesson plan. Some of my classmates told me that we should ask questions that extend their thinking so I included this during the lesson and this was really helpful advice.…

Determining Subject Matter I worked with the CT to identify the topic that would be appropriate for this assignment. After reviewing the upcoming lessons and considering the timeline, we agreed that I would teach the students about coordinate planes, including the parts of the plane, how to plot points, find the distance between points, and reflect points across axes. The timing of this topic is fitting since the students just completed a unit on number lines, integers, and rational numbers. State, District, and National Standards Met The two AZ College and Career Readiness Standards, found on the Arizona Department of Education (ADE) website, that will be taught during this topic are: 6.NS.C.6.…

Go math and the Journey’s textbook are two resources that could be used in the classroom to enhance student learning. Go math books are used as worksheet books in which the students completes to learn the math standards that the district has set. I use this to teach the students their math facts, like counting by 10s and grouping as well as place value. This supports student learning because I use these books to model what they, the students, should be doing and how to do it, but it also helps me to see which students can do it on their own, and which ones would need additional support. The Journey’s textbook are also district assigned texts that all the grades are using, I could use this to help students learning, by reading the stories from…

Reading The Explosive Child by Ross W. Greene and Superparenting for ADD by Edward M. Hallowell and Peter S. Jensen has shed some light on teaching students with different challenges and abilities. As Greene puts it, “kids do well if they can” (2010). This statement is something we as educators should keep in mind when working with students who exhibit behavioral challenges or may be displaying signs of ADD. Greene tells us that if our students had the capability of dealing with the challenges set before them adaptively, they would do so. Children do not enjoy the struggles, arguments, and other negative consequences of their maladaptive behavior any more than the parents and teachers do.…

Part A: Here in Tennessee we are in a valley with lots of lakes and water falls between the mountains. The water falls have swinging bridges going across them and not everyone will walk across because of the fear of it breaking or swinging too much. So my idea is to have the children build a regular bridge with a roof that does not swing and sheds shade to those in wheel chairs can enjoy the water falls and bridge as well. In this activity we will use Lincoln logs to build a two layer bridge that stretches across with a covered top. First we will sort the logs by size.…

Also, the specialist noted my child is above average in solving problems with more than two steps, and grouping objects together in categories. At the age 4, he was advanced in his thinking ability. He was able to solve the number conservation task for small numbers. To expand his knowledge in this area, I’ve decided that introducing new computer games involving math and science was a good idea. He was doing fourth grade math in the third grade and continued to excel.…

If she chose to give her students a paper and pencil, multiple choice quiz or pretest, she would be assessing a lower order thinking skill, such as “remember”. If there were short answer questions she may be assessing the “understand”, or “apply” components, but would probably not assess the highest order thinking skills. However, Mrs. Jenkins could easily take this lesson and/or quiz to the next level using technology, or more specifically, something called “Kahoot!”. Using this resource, teachers (or students, parents, etc.) can create fun, interactive…

Teachers often rely on student engagement to measure the level of student interest as it is a predictor of student learning and development. Students that are engaged in the material and actively learning spend more time cognitively processing the material, therefore developing a deepened understanding of the material. Math, recognized second to reading, is another subject area that students with LD struggle academically. One strategy commonly used to teach elementary and middle grade mathematics are manipulatives, or physical objects. Manipulatives can be used to teach basic concepts such as classification and simple addition & subtraction as well as more difficult tasks like fractions.…
