Wikipedia is one of the most useful tools on the Internet that every child growing up is told not to use for his studies. However, writing on Wikipedia is much more than meets the eye. Over the last few weeks, I have realized that Wikipedia is a very intricate site and after learning more about how to use Wikipedia and actually performing edits, I believe Wikipedia deserves more credit than it is given by academics. I believe that this unit was beneficial to my relationship with Wikipedia and made is useful for improving my writing skill set. Previous to this assignment, if I was asked about the mechanics and make-up of Wikipedia, I would have said that all there is to do is click edit and then save your edit. As an infrequent Wiki user I had no idea about any of the numerous features such as the talk pages, page history, and user pages when editing an article. A common misconception with Wikipedia is that articles are written and consist of people randomly editing at will and changing whatever they want when they want either for fun to mess up an article or to fix a mistake and then never returning to the article. However, there is collaboration between users that I think gets looked over by readers. …show more content…
No, not every Wikipedia article is going to be written by someone who has a doctorate in the field of the topic, but there is much more credibility in these articles than people think. First of all, someone who takes the time to write an entire article and post it on Wikipedia is going to be somewhat invested if not extremely passionate about the material they are conveying. If I was to right an article and was actually interested in the topic, then I would want my piece to reflect a well-researched and documented
