Extracurricular activities can range from sports to random volunteer work done. A college looks for the extra things you did while in high school because it makes a person seem interesting or they stand out more than a student that just does school work all day. Due to colleges being very competitive during the application or picking process they look for good grades then when they have that group of kids set aside they look for who stands out from the rest of the others. Volunteer work is one way to stand out from others, volunteering is simple and can easily be arranged by a simple call or email to begin. This would be a great idea because the colleges see how much work you do and how much effort is put into doing …show more content…
Volunteering or working for no pay might be boring but it provides a valuable life skill that everyone should possess. Working with other people you aren’t used to can be scary but it is also a good thing to do because it put you in perspective that you may not always work with people who you necessarily like or know, but you get used to it. Make a difference and show people the better side of everything. For example, if someone is having a really bad day and you volunteer to help them do something or just do something kind for that person, it could make there day one hundred times better. While doing simple gestures you could impact someone’s life tremendously and not even know it. While some people think that volunteering is a really great thing other people may not, and not everyone is going to agree with one another. Some will think you are saying they can’t fend for themselves and need help and others will think you are trying to just be too nice to get something out of them. People believe that sitting around waiting for people to ask for help or need help, is waiting their “valuable” time. Some say that when you give people your “free” time that they don’t appreciate it as much because they become used to it or they do not value it like they

Volunteering not only helps socially in our communities, but also economically. I believe it helps economically because we could contribute to getting homeless people back in the workforce. In addition, many places that help people in need are more often than not on strict budgets, and I believe if people volunteer than perhaps those locations or agencies wouldn’t have to spend as much money on employees and instead have many rotating volunteers, this could also allow them to use funds for other urgent matters. According to the Corporation for National and Community Service, 61.8 million individuals in the United States contributed 8 billion hours of volunteerism in 2008 alone.…

I think the word hero is carelessly used nowadays, being a hero is being able to earn it through hard work and daily dedication. To many people volunteer work is a job or a career even though they don’t get paid. Like volunteer cops and firefighter who work long hours and risk their lives without pay. Tawanda Jones, the founder of the Camden Sophisticated Sisters Drill Team, helped get kids of the streets of Camden, New Jersey to do something good with the life they were given.…

I do not believe that all United Sates citizens should be required to to preform at least one year of community service by the time they are thirty years of age. Forcing someone to help when they aren't willing can do more damage than good. If the person does not want to help they shoulfnt be forced to do so. Volunterring comes from the heart of the person, if their heart is not it, it will not be benificial to the people receiving the help. Most people tend to volunteer at churches, food banks, schools and even in the fire department.…

I volunteered in the recovery room of a hospital for 6 months earlier this year. I was primarily shadowing the nurses as they prepared the patients for transition to the regular rooms. `I also took down results, helped patients get food/drug items they needed, help transport them around the hospital and provided general support to the nursing staff. This was my first experience with volunteering, and it showed me how beneficial it is to not think about myself but help others, while becoming more immersed in my chosen field. On the other hand, it also made me realize that it would be more rewarding to volunteer in a setting with even less available…

There are various ways to give back to others; whether it’s through donations or volunteer work they can all make a positive impact on the greater community. Personally, I believe the best way to enrich others’ lives is by donating your time. I’ve often been asked, “How many hours of community service does your school require? “Unfortunately, my school does not require volunteer hours; therefore there is noticeably very little youth involvement in our community. I believe volunteering should be done by everyone, even if it’s not required.…

Something that I heard from lots of college representatives and current college students that I knew was that extra curricular activities looks good to colleges. I knew that I had the sports aspect of extracurricular activities because I played baseball and basketball throughout my high school career but extra clubs and activities outside sports were lacking in my case. After friends and family endlessly bugged me for weeks on end about the importance of being more involved, I finally decided to apply to a well known group/society which was the National Honor Society. After I was accepted I had to search for somewhere to spend 10 hours at and take care of my community service. When I originally looked at the time, I thought that it would be a waste of time but I knew it would be helpful to me and my transcript.…
