Benefits Of Using Animals In Scientific Research

Nowadays using animals in scientific research is a common thing. According to peta.org, more than 100 million animals are used in the US laboratories for medical research, biology classes, cosmetics testing, smoking experiments, and so on. In fact, many people consider using animals in scientific research as inhumane while others believe it’s totally acceptable to test on animals. Using animals in scientific research may seem to be cruel; however, the benefits scientists get from animal testing is totally worth the effort. Opponents of animal research claim that the data collected from animals are not reliable. The reason is that human beings and animals don 't have the same body structure and the same reaction during the experiments. Actually, …show more content…
It’s true that we can use computers to replace animals in some research; however, when the biological experts don’t understand how all the things work in human bodies, how can a computer created by mankind have the ability to handle the complex experiments? For instance, Dennis Noble, a professor from Oxford University, uses computers to design a virtual heart which may take almost 30 hours to just finish several beats of heart because billions of divergent mathematical problems are being done at the same time while the computer has a limitation. Thus, computers are not enough for research. In reality, a lot of basic cell processes are similar in different kinds of animals. For instance, animals share the main functions such as reproduction, sight, hearing, and breathing. It’s impossible to calculate and collect vital data from all of these things by using only a computer. Besides, before people can program a computer model to do medical research, an understanding of physiology is needed first. Therefore, we have to use animals in the scientific research to obtain a better understanding of the way living things work, and then apply that …show more content…
Even though the data we get from animal testing is not always reliable, animal testing is still beneficial to both humans and animals. The most important thing is that humans don 't have other choices if they don 't use animals. For those people who are against animal experiments actually are destroying the future care because understanding of one type of animal can also benefit all kinds of animals and humans. Now many pets, livestock, and animals in zoos have longer life period and become healthier as a result of animal research. Therefore, the use of animals in experiments is necessary and

Animal Research is, has always been, and will most likely continue to be a delicate subject. The use of animals in research ranges from cosmetics to medical and wherever there are animals being tests there are groups of people arguing the morality and ethics of the testing being done. Excluding cosmetics and the like for now (that’s a different argument), the use of animal research in neuroscience is absolutely necessary and though it is a sensitive issue, there are ways to make it more ethically acceptable and to protect the animals themselves from blatant cruelty. Today, animal research is more humane than it has ever been.…

Animal body functions seem to work differently than ours. For example, dogs are allergic to chocolate and cannot have it, not every human is allergic to chocolate. That is just one example of the difference between animal and human bodies. 95% of the animals used in experiments are not protected by the Animal Welfare Act. (Should Animals).…

Animal testing, although defective, has proven to be beneficial. Animal testing has contributed to medical science in a number of ways. Because of the complexity of the human body, scientists will argue that it is necessary to perform research on living animals. However, because humans and other animals vary significantly, these tests may not always produce accurate results. Although there are alternatives to animal testing, eliminating the usage of animals will slow the progress of medical advancement.…

Every year, approximately 26 millions animals are being used for commercial and scientific testing according to http://animal-testing.procon.org/. Many new developments are made due to animal testing, such as, medical treatments, diagnosing the toxicity of medications, and examining whether products are safe for human use. Although animal testings lead to many life saving treatments, it is considered inhumane and cruel to many because it often inflicts a great amount of pain and suffering on the living organism that is being tested. Also in recent years, many alternative methods for researching have been discovered and can replace the use of animals all together. Animal research has been around for many decades because of the advantages such…

“It is very hard to create an animal model that even equates closely to what we’re trying to achieve in the human” states Paul Furlong, a professor of Clinical Neuroimaging at Aston University. Animal cells are so much different than human cells and they work so much differently that it is nearly impossible to reliably predict the human reaction based on an animal test. 94% of the drugs that pass animal tests end up failing in human trials (understandinganimalresearch.org). According to Animal Testing is Bad Science, “Human clinical and epidemiological studies, human tissue- and cell-based research methods, cadavers, sophisticated high-fidelity human patient simulators and computational models are more reliable, more precise, less expensive, and more humane than animal experiments.” This means that scientists have many other alternative testing methods to get the information they need without the use of animals. This just proves that using animals is not only unnecessary, but just plain…

Animal testing is an unnecessary part of science that should be gotten rid of completely. Instead of sacrificing the lives of innocent animals, we should spend our time studying the cells of humans and how the product can impact someone before testing it on humans. Animals used for scientific or product testing are under an unnatural and stressful environment, one they would otherwise never come across in life, causing the animal to not react as it should. The Animal Welfare Act states that animals can be burned, shocked, and poisoned. They also state that any experiment that wants to be tested is prohibited no matter how trivial it may be.…
