As Heath Officer of the Shiawassee County Health Department, I am interested in getting our health care organization nationally credited. There is Seven Steps to the Public Health Department Accreditation process. In addition, there are many benefits to becoming nationally credited. The benefits are: measurement of performance, standardization, advancing quality and performance, improving service, values, and accountability to stakeholders. These crucial areas will be improved if Shiawassee County Health Department becomes nationally accredited. Also, a positive reputation in the community is important to the overall success of the organization. The performance is not just measured again local health departments; however, it is measured nationally. Measuring nationally provides many benefits because it can demonstrate if the health department is above or below in certain aspects of the business operation. Understanding how the health department is running is powerful because we can make changes to advance performance and quality. Knowledge is power and having a standard and a goal to reach as an organization can empower and focus the workers to perform their jobs better. We need to ask ourselves, are we an organization that is on the forefront providing the best care as possible or are we an organization that is not. I believe that we need to be the best organization in our geographical area and even in the nation. This might be a stretch, however, if you do not believe that you are the best then we never will. We as an organization need to be accredited so that we are the leaders of all health departments and also give our patients and employees the best experience as possible. It is our job to benefit everyone and do no harm to anyone. Therefore, we need to start the process of accreditation. We do not have to do it right now, but we need to start talking about it and get all of our things in a row. Once we start the process, our organization will be better
