Diet, a dreaded word for almost every human being. Many New Year’s resolutions are dedicated to starting a new diet, eating healthier, and exercising more. Within 2 weeks, a quarter of the New Year’s revolutions to diet are broken and in only 1 month almost half of the attempts are deserted (Averkamp, 2015). In fact, per Averkamp’s research, Americans make an average of 4 attempts a year to lose weight and in 2012 we spent an estimated 65 Billion dollars dieting! We never seem to be happy because with on average most gain what they lose back.
The Paleolithic Diet is a dietary plan based on foods like what might have been eaten during the Paleolithic era, which dates from approximately 2.5 million to 10,000 years ago. This type of diet

They believe that our ancestors were healthier and not obese like Americans are today. An unhealthy example is that the top six calorie sources in the U.S. diet today are grain-based desserts, yeast breads, chicken-based dishes, sweetened beverages, pizza, and alcoholic drinks (Berardi, 2014). In comparison Berardi compares the Paleolithic diet that consumes more fiber, protein (amino acids), omega-3 fatty acids, unsaturated fat, vitamins and minerals and of course less saturated fat and sodium. What he is trying to say is that the paleo crew did not eat at McDonalds much. We learned early on that there are 3 major macronutrients; fats, sugars and proteins. Sugars are our primary fuel for our cells which we need for energy and fats are secondary. Protein comes in last place which happens to be one of the main gears of the Paleo Diet. Extra protein can be advantageous for muscle gain or injury repair but can be harmful as well in cases of pregnant woman and reduced protein diets also induce autophagy (paleoleap.com, 2017). The Paleo Diet is very big on protein but not so much on sugars and fats. So how does this kind of diet work on the body long term? Your cells need sugar for energy and not a minimal amount. You need to supplement more sugar than you burn off, same with fats. If you are eating a diet filled with protein, simple sugars from fruits and nuts, this could not be enough to care for your body over a long time. The Paleo Diet limits fats and therefore lacks lipid soluble vitamins, not completely but limits the necessary amounts your body needs. One major Vitamin would be Vitamin D, from milk as dairy is completely restricted. Water soluble vitamins are supplemented more by things like kale, spinach, and raw seeds for example.
