Industrial Revolution Negative Effects On Family

There were many benefits that came out of the Industrial Revolution. However, in the end, it resulted in more negative effects which outweighed the positive ones. The Industrial Revolution brought immediate negative effects including shifts of family life it and great damage towards the surrounding environment. Also, the Industrial Revolution had long term negative effects including the dangerous effects it had on the “new imperialism” many years later. When the Industrial Revolution got started in Britain around the 1700’s, it first seemed like a beacon of hope for the people and advancement of the country with new inventions and wealth. However, as the Industrial Revolution continued to spread, more changes kept shifting family life. As time went on, a new strict code developed that families had to abide by. There were rules that said how dress at any occasion, how to give dinner parties, pay for a social call, when to write letters, how long to be sad over a dead relative, and parents taught their children that they were expected to be seen but not heard from. Along with being forced to follow this strict code, stereotypes about the role of women developed during the Industrial Revolution. All of the media developed during this time helped shaped the cult of domesticity that created the stereotypes of the role of a woman in a family. They were expected raise the children, control servants, and join in charitable services. The best way to sum up what women were seen as in society at the time was that they were weak, self-sacrificing caregivers who took care of their children and was a relief for their hard-working husband.
