Benefits Of The College Jumpstart Scholarship

Decent Essays
As a first-generation woman of color that comes from a low-income household, I quickly realized that the opportunity to attain a college degree is unique and would not be possible if it were not for scholarship money and grants. If awarded the College JumpStart Scholarship I would use it to cover the various expenses of my spring semester. I intend to use the scholarship to buy books and supplies that will be required for the courses that I am taking. Also, I would use the scholarship to better immerse myself in campus life. With the scholarship, I could afford the time to attend talks and lectures, get more involved in on-campus clubs, pay for transportation, and most importantly work fewer hours at my work-study which in turn would enable me to do all that was previously mentioned.

The accomplishment of receiving the Jumpstart scholarship would do wonders in the next step for my education in the subsidizing of the costs that come with attending college. I seek to attend Johnson & Wales University and upon acceptance, have been fortunate enough to receive a significant number of grants and loans from the university that nearly cover my entire college tuition. Yet, my parents and myself still face the obstacle of paying for room rates as well as possible meal plans for the trimesters. This obstacle is only made harder in the additional expenses of books, transportation, off-campus meals and personal items. So, the possibility of receiving this scholarship plays a major factor into how far I will get into attending my first…

I have a twin sister that will also be attending college at the same time as me; receiving this scholarship would really benefit my family as my mom is a single parent who is solely responsible for all of the expenses. I am a straight A student who is involved with numerous extracurricular activities such as National Honors Society, Beta Club, Student Council, and Mu Alpha Theta where I serve as the Public Relations Officer. Along with my studies and activities, I have been involved with competitive dance for 15 years and I have a part time job at a clothing boutique. I am an extremely well-rounded student who is self-motivated, so I believe that I will put this scholarship to great use. In the fall of 2017 I plan to attend the University of South Carolina to study finance.…

Receiving this scholarship would help me in more ways than one. This scholarship would help my family and I pay for the expenses of my books and my tuition, this way I would not be stressed during my studies of how I will be able to pay for all of my schooling. Any form of money that I can receive will be significantly beneficial. Being a recipient I would use this money to put towards my degree in Occupational Therapy, where I will be helping kids with disabilities learn the basic day to day living skills. After graduation, I will be attending East Central College to get my general courses out of the way, while taking classes that will help me in my future career.…

In twenty years, as a board member of a scholarship selection committee, I would award the 17-year-old me a scholarship not because I am simply answering the prompt in my favor, but because I know that the 17-year-old me's dream is to go to college to gain a higher education and has made learning a high priority since elementary school. The 17-year-old me is determined, hard-working, and understands the struggle of having little money, so I would know that the scholarship would not go to waste; she would use it so that her parents can ease their worry about how she is going to go to college, since they are not able to make any contributions. Knowing that her family earns little income, she has spent most of her high school years dedicating her time to her schoolwork, hoping that she would be qualified to earn scholarships during her senior year. During the other majority of her time, she has volunteered for over 300 hours at various locations and participating in school clubs and activities.…

I feel like I am a good candidate for this scholarship because, as a senior, any and all money earned and received will help me ease the burden of attending college. My goal throughout my whole childhood was to receive a full ride scholarship to the college of my dreams; however, as time has gone on and I have matured I have come to the realization that, that dream is not as achievable as I once believed it to be. I have worked hard, inside and outside of the classroom, making the grades and creating the resume that colleges are looking for, and in response I have been offered tuition waivers. Which ultimately means I am still responsible for paying for my books, room and board, part of the tuition cost, and mandatory fees.…

I am the first generation in my family to attend a University and never had an explanation about the application process. An educational opportunity I took advantage of was the Early Academic Outreach Program. This preparation program gave a presentation at my AP English class during my junior year and motivated me to assist their two day weekend bootcamp. The program was so valuable that it was worth it waking up early and for my parents driving me to UCLA for two days. It helped me to overcome my anxiety and my hesitation about the application process to Universities.…

In my life, my family has tended to have some financial issues. I do not want to delve deeply into them, but I do want to say that we could use any help we can get when it comes to scholarships. Even though I do plan on attending a fairly cheap (compared to other colleges) community college. This college is NICC because I heard that it has a nice engineering program and that is what I plan on doing when I am older. I think that a nice and cheap community college would still produce problems in my families income which is why I think that any scholarships would benefit greatly.…

Throughout our lives as adolescents we are asked “what do we want to become?” I have contemplated what I wished to do with my life for quite a while and I was inspired by constants in my life ever since I was little. I remember always having a pet by my side to comfort me when I was unhappy and play with me when I was alone. The catalyst for my decision was whenever I lived on a busy street with cars constantly speeding through every day. One sunny day I went to the car to retrieve something from the car with my pug by my side.…

Moreover, being a low-income student has impeded me from participating in and being able to perform a multitude of “normal life” activities. Being a low-income student, neither I nor my mother have a vehicle; therefore, my situation restricts me from playing sports, participating in school events, having a job, and hanging out with peers outside of school. One aspect of being a low-income student has not restricted me from is my education; I’m able to retain spectacular grades and not let my situation effect my ability to strive my educational goals I aim to achieve. The situation I am in is full of hardships, but nevertheless my GPA is exceptionally high and I am graduating on time. To me, this is a massive milestone to the launch of an immeasurable…

With the high demand for students to obtain a college degree, the majority of society assumes high school seniors should make college the next step in their lives. However, going to college and actually completing the journey is much easier said than done. Many factors such as the price of tuition, the increased competition for scholarships and admission, and the level of support and encouragement one has affect those "college times" in a person 's life. An aspect of this journey that really stands out to me is the use of programs that aid first-generation college students. From the financial aid to the programs ' mentoring benefits, these programs can make a huge difference in the lives of so many people hoping to obtain the education they…
