Argumentative Essay: Integrating Technology Into Schools

For years, technology has molded our thinking, actions, and lives. Technology is a tool that never stops advancing as it grows with us. Many people use technology and its tools to help educate themselves and others in the workplace, home, and other various environments. So quite naturally, when school board officials and educators proposed that this technology should be incorporated into the school system many were eager to start the process. However, technology should not be integrated into the schools system because it creates problems such as academic dishonesty, possible layoffs, and technological malfunctions. With classes being solely online, teachers’ jobs are being put at risk because there is no need for instructional time in the classroom. According to the Pew Research Center, 12% of teachers’ lost their job after their school received an increase in technological integration (4). By teachers’ jobs being put at risk, they are at risk to lose their source of income and students are at risk of losing valuable instructional time. Students lose access to questions, answers, extra help, and tutoring when teachers’ are not in the classroom. Not only does incorporating technology into schools put teachers’ at risk but it also puts the students that they are teaching at risk as well. It is vital that teachers maintain their jobs because it gives students an opportunity to engage in conversation, question & answer, and activities that can further their understanding of the material. In another study conducted by the Pew Research center, 71% of teachers agree that due to the excessive amount of technology and increasing classroom sizes resulting from lost jobs, students tend to have a shorter attention span and are less likely to pay attention in class. Having such a large amount of teachers agree is crucial because it shows that technology integration is detrimental to students’ education even through the eyes of those that are usually around and teach the students. Although technology integration can result in teacher layoffs and a decrease in the attention span of students, by incorporating technology into schools students are able to work at their own pace (5). By working at their own pace, students are able to complete their assignments when it’s convenient for them resulting in their work being done more efficiently and on time.
