Many families in the Unites States struggle every day to pay for their groceries and bills. When families and individuals struggle to afford their necessities they search for the best way to receive assistance. It is harder for families that have low-income. Many families talk to a social worker in order to get the assistance that they need. Most of the time families are referred to the nearest Department of Human Services office and are told to apply for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program or SNAP benefits, also known as the Food Stamps Program (Richards, Sindelar, 2013, p. 397). SNAP benefits were created to lighten poverty. The role of SNAP benefits in reducing the prevalence, depth, and severity of poverty increased from 2000 to 2009, during a period of increasing state variation in program administration (Tiehen, Jolliffe, & Gundersen, 2012, p 3). Tiehen, Jolliffe, and Gunderson (2012) stated, “we found an average decline of 4.4 percent in the prevalence of poverty due to SNAP benefits, while the average decline in the depth and severity of poverty was 10.3 and 13.2, respectively” (p. 3). The study by Tiehen, Jolliffe, and Gunderson concluded that SNAP plays an important role in improving the poverty of individuals in low-income households. Social workers can help families find resources through out the entire process while they are in poverty. Social workers are a great help to individuals that go through hard times while finding resources. One of the responsibilities social workers have is to help families in poverty and immigrant families get the food assistance that they greatly need. Another role is to be culturally competent while working with immigrant families. Social workers must comprehend the culture of each family. Also, social workers need to acknowledge that some families may be embarrassed of the situation they are in. Everyone has their own thoughts on their own situation.
