Social security covers about 38 million retired and 10 million disabled people. For more than half of the senior citizens social security is their main source of income in their household. Social Security is a lifetime income that protects retired and disabled seniors from worrying about financial problems. “At the time the social security system was established, the elderly constituted 5% of the population (Moody 2006), and the average life expectancy was about 50 years of age (Curl and Hokenstad 2006).” “The proportion of the elderly in 2000 grew to 12%, and is projected to increase to 21% by 2050 (He et al. 2005).” With the growing rate of elderly it is presumed that they will increase to such a number that there will be more retired than workers. With that being said this would mean that Social Security would run into a major problem. “The Social Security and Medicare Boards of Trustees (2007), a nonpartisan panel responsible for reporting on the financial status of the Social Security Trust Funds, projects that tax revenues will fall below actual program costs in 2017. This is the year when the program will spend more than it receives through payroll deductions.” With this being said it means the government would have to pay for the rest of Social Security since the work people would not tax enough to pay for social security.
