Marijuana Should Not Be Legalized Marijuana (Cannabis) on November 6th 2012 become legalized for recreational use in the states of Colorado and Washington. Since the legalization of Marijuana in these states it has been a march to get the legalization for other states in the U.S.. Marijuana should not be legalized in any state because you don’t know who is using it and when it is being used. Marijuana is a gateway drug. Marijuana is harmful to the future of the ones using it and for those who are surrounded by users. It can be argued that it’s just for recreational use but by legalization it’s just justifying that it is okay from a standpoint. Marijuana is not okay. Marijuana eventually leads to other drugs including cocaine and heroin. According to Rey Joseph, et al and surveys done over the last few year’s shows that a large amount of youth who started smoking marijuana eventually went on to do other drugs such as cocaine and heroin (32). The drug is addictive and can become something that your body relays on for just a while, however when the drug no longer gives the high that the user is wanting they tend to move on to something more stronger and potent to get that specific high (Ingold). People under the age of 21 admitted to doing marijuana on a regular basis, 70% of those admitted to doing hard illicit drugs such as cocaine and heroin (Joseph, et al 32). Marijuana could lead to worse things than just getting high on a regular basis because marijuana will never be enough for those who are addicted to the drug. Heroin and cocaine lead to a long road of addiction and jail time and those things begin with marijuana. Joseph Califano says that those willing to try mind alternating drugs would be willing to try other things that would alter the mind (23). Joseph Califano states that “Teens who drank and smoked cigarettes and used marijuana at least once in the past month are 16 times more likely to use hard drugs (25).” Marijuana is definitely a gateway drug and that is another reason that the legalization of marijuana should not happen.
