How Later School Start Time Benefits Students
In today’s society, many students are facing chronic health issues like sleep deprivation and delaying school start time might just be the solution. A recent study suggests that teens need an average span of 9 hours of sleep per night for optimal academic performance, and a later school starting time would ensure that students could get the essential 9 hours of sleep. Delayed school start time also comes with many benefits, like improvement in student’s academic score, and a chance to eat a healthy breakfast.
With many public schools starting earlier than 8:30 am, most students would have to wake up at 6 am or 7 am for to prepare and get ready for school; but in reality, waking up at 6 or 7 would not grant students enough hours of sleep to function properly, and the lack of sleep will cause the student to be unable to concentrate in class, and to have an increased chance of getting chronic disease such as heart disease, stroke, and diabetes. With school starting so early in the morning, teens just doesn't get enough rest, and on top of that, teen’s brain also doesn't naturally wake up until 8. An active brain is essential for students to learn, and achieve high academic scores. However, people may say that most teens nowadays doesn't care about school, and it doesn't matter if they have an active brain or not; they still doesn't want to learn. While this may be true, giving teens the chance to learn with a fully rested body and mind may cause them to be more likely to engage in their academics, and take in information much more effectively. This is significant because when students are actively engaged in a class, the likelihood of them wanting to learn would also increase, and teens dropout rate would decrease of because of
