FOR Jennifer White, a senior at North Shore High School in Glen Head, an open campus has meant the freedom to leave school at lunch time, as well as during other free periods, to work on independent research projects. However, if the School District decides, by its targeted deadline of mid-November, to close the high school campus, students no longer will be permitted to leave school during the time when they are not in scheduled classes. The current policy at North Shore High School, which has been in effect for more than 15 years, allows all of the 547 students in Grades 9 through 12 to leave campus during lunch or other free periods.…

Imagine waking up in the morning, looking out the window, and seeing a few feet of fresh, untouched snow outside. The roads are covered because the snowplows have not gone through yet, and people are just starting their day. Well, contrary to a typical snow day, students still have to get up to do schoolwork because school was not canceled, it was transformed in a virtual way. The idea of virtual classrooms taking place when there is too much snow on the ground first became a test trial in Bergen County of New Jersey in 2014. Online Textbooks When I was in the K-12 school system, I remember at the beginning of every year, the teacher would call us students up by name to sign for an old, hardcover, seven to ten-pound textbook with horrible illustrations on the cover. Then, as the year went on, I was expected to lug this book all over the school building until the end of the year. If I somehow lost track of the textbook, I would be hit with a seventy-five dollar to a two-hundred-dollar bill. I thought I would have to go through this terrible cycle my whole life, until the day I signed up for my BUS 100 course with a free online textbook. All the course information was at my fingertips.…
