Recently I did my observation at Chime Institute 's Schwarzenegger Community School in a first-grade class that consisted of about twenty students both those of who have disabilities and do not. These students are typically six years old and at the time there was one teacher and one assistant who led the class. According to the Lamar County School Student/Parent handbook,There are a number of factors are taken into account when computing a student's grade: homework, daily class work, neatness in preparation of work, promptness in completing work, projects, portfolios, and more. (41) Many classes focus particularly on the skills that require teacher observations (e.g. participation in cooperative group work) rather than grading paperwork. For this reason, attendance is also a factor to take into account when determining grades,because students need to be present in order to receive a grade for activities that require teacher observations such as group projects, whole class discussions, and more types of formative and summative assessments. Lamar County Public Schools have a 10 point grading scale and has four grade reporting periods for each school year. Wide spectrum of abilities: Having a inclusive class with a wide range of children and abilities could also cause a problem when supporting learning activities, ensuring that all children are engaged, involved and fully understand the task that has been set. This can be dealt with by splitting the children in to ability based groups and providing the appropriate work for each group and setting achievable targets. Lots of encouragement and regular observation will make them feel comfortable in what they are doing. Supporting them throughout will allow me to assess them further and make evaluations on their progress. If they weren’t comfortable with independent learning I will need to re assess my methods and try something that will achieve the best outcome for the student. Resources could include ICT, practical work, verbal assessments or written work, each pupil is individual and need to learner that way. There are over forty types of muscular dystrophy and each varies in characteristics and severity. Duchenne muscular dystrophy is the most common type and only boys are affected by it. When observing a special education classroom I am not only observing the class, but I am observing a glimpse into my future as a teacher. I was privileged enough to observe a multi-needs intermediate classroom with students who range from eight to ten year olds at Hope D. Wall School who have moderate to server learning disorders and physical handicaps. The purpose of the multi-need classroom is for the teacher to assess which path the student will take after the year is over. President Gerald Ford signed The Education for All Handicapped Children Act (EHA) into law in 1975. The law became known as the “Bill of Rights” for children with disabilities and their families, and it helped to establish the advancements and strides in Special Education policy as well as advocacy. EHA was created to make sure that children with disabilities were able to have access to public education that was free and appropriate to their conditions. It became local and statewide support and protection to the children with disabilities as well as their families. I have previously worked at the John Grant School for children with complex needs. Here I worked either on a 1:1 basis or in a classroom. An example of this is I worked on a 1:1 basis with a pupil with Cerebral Palsy who was unable to join in active group activities due to his physical restrictions. I would tailor the activity to enable him to join in whilst taking into account any needs or requirements so he wasn’t left out.
