One in seven Americans are considered to be in the geriatric age group. (A Profile of Older Americans: 2013, 2003) Gerontological nursing is the field of nursing involving care for patients over the age of sixty five. (Tabloski, P.A., 2014) The purpose of this post is to discuss what gerontological nursing means to the student, why the student thinks nursing students do not choose gerontological nursing as a specialty, and what would increase interest in this area of nursing.
If I would have been asked a year ago what gerontolgical nursing means to me, I would have had a totally different answer than I do today. After working in a long term care facility for over a year, gerontogical nursing means providing special nursing care to elderly patients. This special care includes care for Alzheimer patients, hospice patients or end of life care, etc. Working in a nursing home to me is comparable to home health nursing because to most of our patients the nursing home is their permanent home. …show more content…
Also, I believe gerontological nursing is portrayed as working with “crazy Alzheimer patients” or combative patients. I believe it is also portrayed as boring and not “real” nursing. I will admit I had the same feelings during nursing school and before I started my first job in a long term care facility. Now that I have worked in a long term care facility for over a year, I would not trade my experiences or the things I have learned for
