Genetically modified bacteria can benefit society in many ways. “Genetically-modified foods have the potential to solve many of the world’s hunger and malnutrition problems” (Pandey, A.). This paper will show how modified bacteria is beneficial through nutrients in food, resistance towards drought and chemicals used on plants, and uses for pharmaceuticals.

First, there needs to be an understanding of how genetically modified bacteria works. Genetically modified crops start off with bacteria that has been modified to create new, enhanced products. Many countries around the world aren’t able to obtain certain nutrients due to their circumstances. The fact that third world countries aren’t able to provide their populations with the proper nutrients, genetically modified crops have been created to make up for those lacked nutrients. The creation of genetically modified crops through this method has allowed third world countries to benefit from the crops that are created. “Through the use of genetic engineering, rice can be genetically engineered so as to add additional vitamins and thus many nutrient deficiencies could be overcome” (Gabol, Waris Ali). The purpose of genetically modified crops is to help people who can’t get certain nutrients around the world and aid with nutrient deficiencies. Malnourishment is big problem in third world countries, but genetically modified crops have been able to help with these problems. A genetically modified crop that was created to help these countries was called golden rice. Rice is the main crop that is eaten in these countries, so golden rice was created to bring in vital nutrients to people living in third world countries. Not having a proper amount of nutrients can cause serious problems like blindness which has been rising due to the lack of vitamin A. It’s an important vitamin that is necessary in our everyday diet. Without this vitamin health problem would begin to show up and create serious problems. A vitamin A deficiency is common in many countries that aren’t able to provide their poor population with nutrient rich products. Since these problems have started to arise, new solutions have been created to solve these health problems. One of the main food sources in these countries is rice which isn’t modified with any additional nutrients that are needed. “Rice is known for having too little iron and vitamin A. In regions where rice is eaten almost exclusively, vitamin A deficiency is widespread” (GMO Compass). The cultivation of rice is very popular in Asian countries and most of them are considered third world countries. For example, India is one of the top producers of rice and is a third world country that faces many health problems. With the help of golden rice, much of its population can prevent vitamin A deficiency. “Researchers in Zurich and in Freiburg, Germany, with funding from international foundations and enterprises, succeeded in creating a rice cultivar offering beta-carotein, a metabolic precursor to vitamin A” (GMO Compass).
