Fracking is shorthand for hydraulic fracturing, the process of extracting natural gas from shale rock. The Energy Information Administration projects United States greenhouse emissions will fall below 2005 levels by 2040, and that is not the only result. Indeed, there are multiple benefits to increased natural gas production, including less dependence on foreign oil and opportunities for the U.S. to be an energy exporter. Lower energy costs are also helping to revive U.S. manufacturing, creating jobs in addition to those directly associated with fracking. (“Who Regulates Fracking?”) Obama recognizes these benefits in his speech, as he later spoke on the topic of decreased carbon emissions. Over the course of oil production with fracking, carbon emissions have decreased, and more oil has been made available. When he spoke on the topic of decreased energy bills, he was correct, as consumer natural gas bills have dropped by 47% since 2011. ( US Fracking is About to Transform the Global Energy Market”) Fracking has greatly benefited the United States economy, providing 9.8 million jobs in the industry. More jobs means more productive and efficient economy, and increased production rates. This increases the nation’s GDP, and general economic stability. The healthy GDP growth rate is one that is sustainable so
