The farm-to-school program is very important for students because it is an easy way to access fresh, healthy fruits and vegetables. Eating artificial and chemical food everyday is not good for the health of young children(Annigan 2015). There are many disadvantages of eating unhealthy food(Annigan 2015). Eating unhealthy food can cause obesity, diabetes, and heart disease(Annigan 2015).“Some of the main effects of not eating healthy are being obese, feeling tired all the time, having weak bones and/or muscles”( Diane 2015). Being obese is hard for some people because they have shortness of breath, heart problems, weak joints and not being able to walk a long distance. When the right nutrients are being provided to students, this will help them function and perform well in their classes. “Eating healthy is important because this can prevent high blood pressure”( Ducharme 2013). Students being happy and feeling good about themselves is the key ingredient for them to have a healthy lifestyle. Providing students food that is not healthy will destroy their body. So, in order for students to stay healthy and focus in school, the schools need to provide the right kind of food for them. This will allow students to feel good about themselves inside and outside. Healthy eating is good for everyone, not only students. Teachers and staff can have a healthy diet also. Taking in the same number of calories as you burn ensures your weight remains steady over time(Hanes 2015). In addition to the quality of the foods you consume, the quantity matters when considering good eating habits(Hanes 2015). Unhealthy eating habits have contributed to the obesity epidemic in the United States(Scanlon 2014). Food is the source of energy for all of our bodily functions and directly affects how our bodies and minds function in every stage of life(Healthy eating 2015). Providing healthy food for students at a young age will improve their chances of having a healthy eating habits later on in life. Schools should incorporate fresh fruits and vegetables from the garden with the cafeteria good because it decrease the risk of having diseases, being obese, and it provides proteins and nutrition for the students If you miss out on too much of the protein, vitamins and minerals that your body needs, your muscle mass will decrease as your fat stores increase.
