Merriam Webster defines it as “the quality or state of having many different forms, types, ideas, etc” or “the state of having people who are different races or who have different cultures in a group or organization”. Diversity. During my original college search I did not take the time to explore this important aspect of potential colleges as I could have and should have. A fault which I hope to correct with my transfer to a new program.
Diversity gives people the opportunity to experience things outside of their comfort zone. A diverse environment values differences. It recognizes how important varying ideas are to improving the community as a whole. Communities that encourage and harness these differences allow sharing of these varying views and experiences. And the encouragement of diversity benefits society. It goes beyond race or ethnicity, diversity is the variety of components that makes each person unique; this can range from geographical background, religion, sexual orientation to things like hobbies or musical taste.
This past summer after high school graduation I had the opportunity to travel to Mexico to help my older sister build a home for a family in need, similar to the well-known “habitat for humanity”. Having never traveled outside of the United States I was exposed to an

Diversity tackles stereotypes, discrimination and racism head on, it provides a realistic view of the world. No matter what career you end up in, you’re guaranteed to be surrounded by employers, coworkers, customers from diverse backgrounds. Diversity allows widening of one’s social circle, so that you aren’t solely surrounded by people who think and act like you, fostering self-growth and development. Diversity fosters curiosity, as it did for me after my trip to Mexico, I wanted to learn more about cultures outside of my own. I believe a quality education requires this sort of environment and I hope to find that with my next
