In the article The War on Sex Workers, Melissa Gira Grant stated that “In Louisiana, some women arrested for prostitution have been charged under a 200-year old statute prohibiting “crimes against nature.” Despite the fact that they were only doing their job, they were still arrested because law enforcement viewed their choice of career as morally wrong and inappropriate. Many people believe that the solution to this is to completely legalize it, but that has caused controversy among the sex worker community. Decriminalizing sex work would mean that sex workers would no longer be breaking the law by doing their job. Legalizing sex work means that specific laws and policies would be made by the state that regulate prostitution and there would still be a chance that sex workers could still be arrested and charged for crimes they did not commit. People have also said that legalization will make sex workers lives harder and cause an increase in human trafficking. The problem with this is that sex workers can still be criminalised while working even if it is legalized. Decriminalizing it gives more control to sex workers while still providing them with the proper protection and rights. Amnesty International, one of the most respected human rights organizations in the world, recently said, “We have seen evidence to suggest that the criminalization of sex work leads to social marginalization and an increased risk of human rights abuses against sex workers. The evidence also suggests that decriminalization could be the best means to protect the rights of sex workers and ensure that these individuals receive adequate medical care, legal assistance and police
