DACA does not provide a way to citizenship but it benefits and gives individuals helpful tools. This policy allows qualifying dreamers to earn temporary protection from deportation, a work permit, the ability to apply for a social security number and the ability to obtain a driver’s license identification. To be eligible for DACA, there are certain requirements. Individuals must be under the age of 31 as of June 15,2012 and at least fifteen years old. They must have entered the country prior to their sixteenth birthday, resided in the Unites States since June 15,2007, and currently present in the United States. Also, they must be in school, have graduated, or obtain an equivalent certificate of completion from high school, or must have obtained an honorable discharge from the armed forces. Additionally, they cannot be convicted of any felony or significant misdemeanor (us-immigration). Currently, the USCIS reviews the application for completeness and conducts a background check against a variety of records maintained by DHS. Individuals are either approved or denied. In a few cases, the USCIS may call the applicant to do an interview before they make a decision. With the opportunity that DACA offers, it provides an incentive that there may be an opportunity for individuals to receive a “temporary stay”. It motivates other ineligible unauthorized immigrants to remain in the United States with the hope that they will be the beneficiaries of a future adjustment of status(nationalreview). It sounds promising for immigrants to hear that there may be an opportunity for individuals to receive a work permit, a license, and temporary stay. Therefore, it increases the number of immigrants coming into the country, but because individuals do not inform themselves of the requirements, a great mass of immigrants arrive to find out they don’t qualify, resulting in even more immigrants. Additionally, this program has also faced challenges. Many states continue to block many DACA beneficiaries from enrolling into college and completing their degrees. Various states have different requirements/laws, and some do not allow them to obtain certain professional licenses. Those who are part of the program have obtained victory when it comes to deferred deportation, but states challenge this policy. Yes, individuals can have a social security and a license but they may not be able to obtain desired jobs due to restriction placed by states.
