The career of counseling psychology is for me because I have always dreamed of being able to improve the lives of others.Counseling psychologists help improve the wellbeing of clients by providing a safe place for them to alleviate their distress in order to live more functioning lives. Counseling psychologists deal with normal development issues as well as physical, emotional, and mental disorders. Counseling psychology is often confused with clinical psychology, but clinical psychology deals with serious mental illness and uses more medically oriented treatments for disease while counseling psychology focuses on more mentally stable people using therapeutic and counseling treatments. A PhD requires four years of classes, research, clinical practice, a dissertation during the fourth year, and an internship during the fifth year (Counseling Psychology Careers). The doctoral training includes coursework and instruction in the core areas of psychology: biological, cognitive, social bases of behavior, etc, specialized instruction in theories of counseling and personality, a supervised practica focused on the development of counseling, psychotherapy, assessment, and consulting, an equivalent of a one year full-time predoctoral internship in professional psych, and an original psychology based dissertation (About the Field of Counseling Psychology).

It is emotionally and physically draining, and it can be hard to separate between personal life and work. With this being said, there are certain traits that a person should have if they want to go into this field. Counseling psychologists must first off want to help people and have genuine warmth toward others as well as great listening skills (Counseling Psychology). They should be able to identify negative thinking patterns and be able to find ways to replace it with positive thinking all while challenging, motivating, and reassuring the client (Counseling Psychology Careers).
Counseling psychologists should have an interest in continuing their education in order to keep up with modern practices. They should have excellent written and oral communication skills and need to be able to communicate with diverse groups. Being compassionate and having empathizing skills is necessary in order to put their patients at ease. Psychologists must be emotionally stable and be able to handle the stress from working with distressed people. A solid ethical code is required in order for their sessions to remain private.
