Many gardeners may not be aware that common items from around the house can start off a healthy, nutritious garden. Composting is one of the ways to retain a well-maintained garden while avoiding chemical fertilizers. Using compost in your garden has been known to be beneficial in building a sustained garden due to its spectrum of essential plant nutrients. Using compost as a organic fertilizer is an important factor in maintaining a healthy garden because it is cost effective, convenient, saves resources, while helping improve plant development. Though compost provides the necessary nutrients for plants, some are concerned about the cost of composting. As many may think it seems, composting only requires a few steps to get started. According to “RecycleNow” composting is one of the easiest ways to begin a well-nourished and healthy garden. First to start off composting a garden, a bin is needed. With this bin it will allow worms and other beneficial organisms to aerate the compost, keep the process neater, and keep away animals. Secondly, fill the bin with balanced mixtures that are high in Nitrogen, such as weeds(before they develop seeds), grass clippings, fruit scraps, coffee grounds, etc. These items are good for activating the heat process in your compost helping retain heat and moisture. Thirdly, water. The compost pile should be damp. Depending on the weather/climate, adding water directly varies or rely on the moisture of the items in the compost pile. Fourthly, check the temperature of the compost pile manually. A way to do this is by checking to see if the pile is hot, if so, the materials are decomposing. Unfortunately, if the items are the same temperature as the surrounding air, add more materials to the bin. Fifth, mix the pile together. Doing this lets the materials in the bin come into contact, avoiding large clumps. While there are safety hazards during the process of composting, if the basic rules are as followed, composting is still the best way to go about when growing a garden. As with anything, there will always be safety and health concerns when starting a project of your own. As a matter of fact, composting is helping our environment, which is beneficial to our health. According to “Home Composting Made Easy” composting lowers the amount of waste materials going out to the landfills, benefiting the safety of the population 's health. In addition to compost decreasing the amount of waste going to landfills, using compost persuades gardeners from using chemical fertilizers. Chemical fertilizers and pesticides are responsible for water contamination. For excessive enrichment of ponds, rivers and lakes is due to an overuse of chemical fertilizers. Due to composting preventing the use of chemical fertilizers this will put help put an end to water contamination.
