Columbus Day has been celebrated for 500+ years, but Americans are now wondering, should Columbus Day still be celebrated? Many believe that the name Columbus has a negative connotation because of the disgraceful events that occurred because of him. Some people say that Columbus Day should be celebrated because he “found” the Americas, but with “finding” the Americas he almost destroyed the Natives. Among his many accomplishments, lay many tragic truths. Although Columbus sailed to the Americas, he was not the first human to step foot there. Did you know Columbus Day is a lie? If you don’t know who Columbus is, he was a man who was claimed to discover America. Many think that Columbus found the New World looking for new undiscovered land but he was in fact trying to find gold and an all-water route to Asia as well as Queen Isabella’s mission for spreading Christianity to Asia. Christopher Columbus was a famous Italian navigator who opened up the way to the Americas. He did not discover America, although we assume him as a hero, being that without him, we may have not known that America existed. Personally, I don’t believe he should be celebrated, since he is the cause of slavery of Native Americans. If it weren’t for Christopher Columbus, there would have not been slavery in America at all. Three ways he can be considered a villain, owing to the procedure with Native Americans which was punishments forcing various slaves to Catholicism, and he transmitted numerous diseases.…

Christopher Columbus day is significant throughout America. Christopher Columbus was someone who found America and was the first person to actually record his path, which allowed others to be able to find it again. Although many think of Columbus day as a fake holiday, they do not focus on the important things that Columbus achieved and accomplished. One reason that we should keep Christopher Columbus day is because he enabled different sea routes that allowed ships to return easily for trading materials. It's that time of year again; pumpkin spice lattes, Halloween decorations, and the national recognition of a man responsible for mass murder, pillaging, and enslavement. It's no secret that Christopher Columbus was a horrible man, or that he didn't even "discover the new world", yet every year on October 12, he is recognized for his "accomplishment". It seems as though more and more people are unwilling to celebrate Columbus, even going so far as to put an axe in the head of his statue. While there has been opposition of Columbus Day for many years, there is only a handful of cities that refuse to recognize it.…

The only piece of history in his favor is the fact that he accidentally discovered America, which could be disproved in the next few years considering all of the extensive research being conducted to find another discoverer of America. His great accomplishment was the destruction of an entire population. How is that heroic? This will in hope eventually bring an end to the celebration of a man who is quite contradictory to what America stands…

In the year of 1492, the Spanish monarchs funded Christopher Columbus on his voyage to what was later called “the New World,” initiating a race between European countries to send out explorers to become the continent’s dominating power. Driven by the promise of wealth, status, and new beginnings, explorers conquered the lands of North and South America, resulting in their direct disruption of the indigenous peoples’ lives. Following this contact, the lives of both Native Americans and Europeans were permanently transformed by the Europeans’ desire for wealth and need to spread and dominate through religion. While providing beneficial outcomes for Europeans, these motives ultimately incited the deterioration of once-thriving native civilizations…
