Controversy: Cell Phones In The Classroom

Cellphones in the Classroom Cell phones have caused controversy in the class room since they became small enough to conceal in a pocket. At first, cellular devices were outlawed form the classroom altogether, but now are allowed on certain accounts. Some schools have already implemented plans to allow the phones in class and on campus. No matter the measures, the issue almost always seems to flare up more problems than positive outcomes. Although there is problems with having a cell phone in class, the phones can be helpful in many ways when “baby steps” are taken into effect. A important way that phones could be useful is that it can help with organization. Students can use available apps on phones to organize their schedules. Most school cannot afford to issue every student a new laptop or tablet, and nearly every student has a phone. The technology inside the phone is enough to be a step forward in education. Phones that have cameras can be used to take pictures of assignments or video record lectures in class. All smartphones that can easily access internet which could aid students needing research while at school. In a classroom with a bluetooth compatible smart-board, a student can show and entire presentation from their phone onto the smart-board. With all the positives of having phones in the classroom, some still will argue that the presence of a phone would be disruptive and cause distractions. Even though there is negative issues, these problems can be limited with restrictions and limited internet access, allowing students to only work off of a wifi controlled by the school. This wifi could allow access to certain websites and limit social media use. Teachers can also set rules for there individual classroom and make notice that any student that violates the rules will be removed from the class that
