Caffeine: The Good, The Bad, The Ugly There has been praise and condemnation concerning caffeine for decades. We hear about the benefits and the negative effects it has on us. What do you think? How much caffeine should you be consuming? How do you consume caffeine? Have you ever experienced withdrawal symptoms? There are three sides to caffeine consumption that every avid consumer should be aware of; the good, the bad, and the ugly. Caffeine is a stimulant found in coffees, teas, sodas, energy drinks, and chocolate. It is also available as a powder and an over-the-counter stimulant. It is considered to be the most commonly used psychoactive drug in the world. The stimulant, once ingested, only takes 15 minutes to travel through the bloodstream and reach the brain. This is why we feel more alert and awake after the consumption of the substance. Adults and children, people of all ages consume caffeine daily. Coffee is the leading source of caffeine in American adults. About 587 million cups of coffee are consumed by American adults in one day. The good side of caffeine has many mental and physical health benefits. Caffeine consumers have been reported to having a decrease in risk of neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s. The stimulant also increases your …show more content…
Caffeine is also sold in its purest form, as anhydrous caffeine. This particular substance is synthesized by plant parts in water, once the plant parts are removed and the water has evaporated, a dry white crystalline powder is produced. One teaspoon of the powder is equivalent to consuming 25 cups of coffee at once. This is a very lethal substance and has caused many deaths due to the misuse of the substance.
