Advantages Of Joining College Essay

“My friends went to college; I enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. When they woke up to decide if they’d go to school or work, I’d already been at work for hours. Their alarms woke them up; my alarms sent me to general quarters and watches. They made plans based on how they felt; I made plans based on the needs of my country. They couldn’t wait to leave their homes; I couldn’t wait to get back. When they look back on their respective lives, they may wonder if they’ve ever made a difference. I’ve never had that problem.” (Anonymous) Veterans and active duty members post this quote all throughout their social media to express the advantage of being a United States Marine. After high school, students are faced with many options that lead them through different paths in life. Among these options, there is the option to join the military or to go to college. Both options have their advantages and disadvantages. In the military you gain experience, soft skills needed to success in your job and benefits while going to college after high school can give you a higher education, better opportunities and thus higher wages.

According to Forbes, in 2015 the most highly valued and highly sought after soft skills in college graduates were good teamwork, decision-making and communication skills. This doesn’t mean all college students lack soft skills. In college today, there are many more opportunities to gain these soft skills than there was before. Colleges and Universities cooperate with business and offer mock interviews, career/job fairs and seminars for students.
