According to Schouten and Glasbergen (2011), the inception of RSPO in 1990s came from WWF (World Wide Fund for Nature) due to environmental problems caused by oil palm expansion. Through an external consultant, WWF-Switzerland explored the chances of a private sector partnership for setting a sustainable palm oil standard. In 2002, the meeting attended by representative from retailers, food manufacturers, palm oil processors and traders, financial institutions and WWF-Switzerland was finally held in London. At this meeting, agreement on the objective of promoting sustainable palm oil was achieved with regards to the existing management plantation and the establishment of new plantations. In the same year, the idea of a roundtable as well as the establishment of Organizing Committee consisting of WWF, the consultant, and Unilever that its purpose was to hold the first Roundtable conference was initiated. The first conference in 2003 was attended by over 200 delegates from 16 countries thus in April 2004 the RSPO was formally established. It took a year to create and ratified the RSPO 's Principles and Criteria. At that time, the members of RSPO who ratified the Principles and Criteria represented approximately 33% of the global oil palm production. The first RSPO certification system for sustainable palm oil was established at the fifth Roundtable meeting (RT5)in 2007.
