Wellpoint Health Insurance System: A Case Study

Anthem is a health insurance that provides multiple benefits and quality services to its customers. The history of Anthem started off with two separate companies, WellPoint Health Networks Inc. and Anthem Inc. Both companies merged in 2004 and became the nation’s leading health benefits company (Anthem, 2015). “The Anthem brand is built on a foundation of trust – it’s the name consumers are most familiar with as a trusted health care partner through our affiliated health plans” (Anthem, 2015, para. 1). The type of insurance plan that I have is the PPO plan. PPO stands for preferred provider organizations and it is considered to be a loose-knit organization in which the insurers are contracted with the limited number of physicians and hospitals that agree to care for patients. This also includes the discounted fee-for-service basis with ultilization review (Bodenheimer & Grumbach, 2012). The total premium per month is not explain through the information given on the insurance card or my insurance account. Most of my uses are towards doctor visits and it would only require a $20 copayment. Having limited knowledge on my health care insurance is extremely difficult because there is not much that I would like to change about my medical coverage. If there was one thing that I would like to change is being able to understand more about my medical insurace. For future references, it would be helpful to know the premiums per month for the health insurance that covers my family and I. It is extremely important to identify what the insurance is able to cover. Co-payments and co-insurance are not the same because it deals with different amounts of payments. Overall, understanding my own health insurance plan has helped a lot for future financing and health care
