When considering what career I wanted to achieve I was given a substantial amount of advice; starting with choosing something that you are passionate about and ending with researching everything you can about what you want to do. Having been given advice, and learned from past experiences that I needed to listen to all the advice. So I thought long and hard about what my dream job would be. I knew it had to be something where I was helping people. After my freshman year in college, I knew without a doubt that I wanted to do something with psychology, hopefully using animal assisted therapy. Now that I know what I want to do, I had to research how to achieve my goals. I never thought of what benefits, pay rate, or actual type of job I would be looking at. While I was doing my research to learn how to achieve my dreams I also started researching what kind of jobs, and pay rates that would be an option for me. …show more content…
According to the website About.com some jobs offered for a person with a Bachelor’s degree in psychology are case management, career counselor, rehabilitation specialist, and psychiatric technician; none of which I really wanted to do. This told me I would have to be in school longer than four years, but how long; is what I was curious to know. So, I looked some more. Not until I achieve at least a Master’s degree will I be able to actually help people like I want. Then the only job offered according to payscale.com is a mental health counselor. Since I wanted more options I did a little more digging and found that in order to really have a good set of options I would have to achieve my Doctorate Degree (PHD). There are two degrees I am interested in and am still trying to decide which I want to do, or if I want to do both. There is the PHD in clinical psychology and the PHD in Counseling
