I think this title is asking me to break down the quotation, “In gaining knowledge, each area of knowledge uses a network of ways of knowing,” and to analyse the validity of the argument that to gain knowledge, each area of knowledge uses a network of ways of knowing, with reference to two areas of knowledge. There are several key words in the quotation that need to be defined. First, the word “gain” implies progress and advancement or benefit toward gaining knowledge. I will focus my essay on this concept of benefit or advancement of the natural sciences and the arts. For the purpose of this essay, I will combine these definitions somewhat and define network as two or more ways of knowing purposefully linked together.
Two ways of knowing often linked together in the natural sciences are reason and sense perception. Scientists must use sense perception to make note of what is happening around them while using reason to determine why something is happening. This is often the case in physics, as shown through Einstein’s experiments with the photoelectric effect. Einstein used sense perception to see that light has both particle and wave characteristics. This is the “what” of the situation, describing what is happening through sense perception. Einstein then used reason to understand that the power of light does not come from…
