The cost of the penny is 1.7 cents more than what the penny was worth but if we changed the …show more content…
The other side says that the penny is too heavy and is a dead weight. Doing the math if you were to ship 100 million pennies on a cargo ship to Hawaii, the weight of 100 million pennies weight is in pounds 551,155 pounds and a full size cargo ship can hold up to 25,000 tons so it obviously is not a dead weight to a ship to carry coins for our country to use from one place to another. Another good point is that the penny does cost more to make costing 1.7 cents for the penny but like I said earlier in this easy the nickel also cost more to make than it's worth costing 8 cents far more than it is worth but since the penny only is worth one cent and the nickel is worth five nobody picks fun or says we should get rid of the nickel. Another part of the argument of the side that wants to get rid of it is that it's a waste of time to make and if we got rid of it we would save money and the machines and the people that run them would do half the work. The flaw with this argument is that obesity is a big problem in today's society. Getting rid of the penny is a big part in the circulation because they need so many and it is one of the main used coins. Stopping that will have less work for the employees and will make them most of them fatter because they will be done earlier from not having to do the penny and go home and
