Benedict Arnold was a great hero. He has influenced the world, he was a selfish leader, and people’s views on him were inadequate. Controversy comes up with Benedict Arnold and there are mixed views as to whether he was good or bad. He was an American Revolutionary War general, best known for his betrayal switch from the Continental Army to the British side of the conflict in 1780.
Benedict Arnold was born in Norwich, Connecticut, on January 14, 1741. Arnold 's father was a very wealthy businessman and Benedict was educated in private schools during his youth. There were three deaths in his life involving his children from yellow fever. This was unexpected and devastating for him to go through. Benedict’s father started making bad decisions, and ended up in hard financial times. Benedict ended up leaving school and being an intern at an apothecary. Then in 1757, at age 16, Benedict enlisted in the military, and went to New York to fight against the French. Two years later he needed to come home to take care of his old father and sister after finding out his mother died from yellow fever. “In the 1700s and 1800s, yellow fever killed more than 100,000 Americans from New Orleans to Boston” (Yellow Fever; Healthday.com). His father did not take the loss of his wife very well and was arrested many times for being drunk before his death came in 1761.
