Comparing Heroes And Heroes In Shakespeare's Much Ado About Nothing

Improved Essays
Much Ado About Nothing was written by William Shakespeare in the late 1500’s, and it is a play that contains many quality themes. It revolves around the combination of comedy, hilariousness, and comic relief with more serious themes such as shame, honor, and deceit. Throughout the play, many sharp contrasts are made between certain people. Particularly, Beatrice and Hero, Benedick and Claudio, and Don John and Don Pedro are contrasted. Beatrice and Hero are the two significant female figures in the play. However, they are very extreme opposites. Their one notable similarity is that both of them are witty to some degree. An example of Hero’s wit could be seen from a line such as, “So you walk softly and look sweetly, and say nothing, I am yours for the walk; and especially when I walk away”(2.1.74-75). She is saying this is reference to dancing, after being asked by a stranger to dance. However, Beatrice’s wit far outshines her cousin’s. In 1.1.43-45 she uses her sarcasm and wit against Benedick as usual: “how many hath he (Benedick) killed and eaten in these wars? But how many hath he killed? for indeed I promis 'd to eat all of his killing.” Using these shrewd words, she is implying that he isn’t even man enough to kill someone. She would eat all his killings, which would be none, of course. Contrasted, however, Beatrice and Hero have completely opposite personalities. Hero is quiet, reserved, and modest, while Beatrice is feisty, quick-tongued, and rebellious. Thus, Hero …show more content…
These contrasts use themes of shame, pride, and deceit to compare and contrast the characters thoroughly. Shakespeare does a great job portraying these characters, but they are, however, without God. The Bible says, “So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.” In the end, even the good characters are hopeless without

In Shakespeare’s Hamlet, two characters are presented as polar opposites. In all actuality, they couldn’t be more alike. Claudius and Hamlet, according to the plot, led us to believe nonsensically that they are poles apart, “A little more than kin and less than kind” (NF, Act1, Scene2). The nature of the play fools us to believe that the relationship is in turmoil; therefore they must be different in character and nature. A contrast and comparison of characters must go beyond a superficial examination, to truly discover the similarities the two shares.…

The play’s plot consists of two contrasting couples: Beatrice and Benedick and Hero and Claudio. Hero is the soft spoken and obedient woman who marries the noble and courageous Claudio.…

The Creation of Humor and Drama In Much Ado About Nothing, Shakespeare created a lighthearted comedy regarding love and all that it entails, with entertaining characters. Although Much Ado About Nothing is a comedy, drama also plays a factor in the story through the diverse mix of serious personalities such as Don John, with more humorous personalities such as Benedick. In addition to these extremes on the serious-humorous spectrum, Shakespeare also uses more complex personalities, such as Leonato with a balance between humor and seriousness, and Dogberry with the comedic articulations of serious ideas. Don John in Much Ado About Nothing is portrayed as a very serious and slightly depressing character.…

Samuel Johnson, English writer and critic from the 18th century, states, “Shakespeare has united the powers of exciting laughter and sorrow not only in one mind, but in one composition. Almost all his plays are divided between serious and ludicrous characters, and, in the successive evolutions of the design, sometimes produce seriousness and sorrow, and sometimes levity and laughter”(Johnson). Johnson is explaining a profound truth about Shakespeare’s works, that perhaps these connections between Othello and Much Ado are just a smaller part of a bigger picture. Perhaps in all of Shakespeare’s plays, he tries to incorporate some aspects of his comedies with his tragedies. Shakespeare is a writer who aims to connect all of his works in some way or another, whether through style…

Before the accusation that Hero has been with other men, all of the characters are considered ones of honor, especially the nobility (Don Pedro and his crew) who have come to stay with Leonato. Much Ado About Nothing does not specifically focus on honor, but instead – in these final acts – focuses on the lack/opposite of honor – shame. The shamed and honored dynamic is displayed by Leonato’s monologue. Despite having raised his daughter and lived with her for years, Leonato immediately believes the men’s version of the story instead of taking Hero’s side. He concludes his monologue saying, “oh she is fallen / Into a pit of ink, that the wide sea / Hath drops too few to wash her clean again, / And salt too little, which may season give / To her foul tainted flesh” (lines 135-139).…

It was only through Benedick that Beatrice would be able to get what she wanted. Benedick was a respectable soldier, which meant that he had the means to confront Claudio and in this manner, restore Hero and her family’s honor. Benedick, by challenging Claudio, would be viewed in a heroic light, while Beatrice would simply be seen as a bystander because she could not challenge him herself. This shifted Beatrice’s position as a vocal and strong woman to a confined woman who could only accomplish something with the aid of a man, perpetuating a sort of damsel-in-distress image, “ I cannot be a man with wishing, therefore I will die a woman with grieving,” (4.1.316-317). The depiction of women in this position is common in Shakespeare’s work; in The Merchant of Venice, Portia, a young heiress, was only given power when she disguised herself as a young, male law clerk.…
