In A Raisin in the Sun by Lorraine Hansberry illustrates an ambitious woman who desires nothing more than to become a doctor. Beneatha Younger, a educated young African American women in her twenties faces challenges like no other, from racial discrimination to her family not believing in her dreams are struggles that many people faces back in the 1950s. In A Raisin in the Sun, Hansberry shows the financial life of the Youngers by describing their living situations and how poorly they were. Although the Youngers did live very imperfectly Beneatha just strived more on becoming a doctor. The family worked more hours than usual just for her to become a doctor in hopes of her taking her family out of the unplanned life they had imagined. In the play Hansberry shows the explicit racism in the 1950s by the conversation between Lena and the other resident living in the apartment complex named Miss Johnson. The conversation ends by Miss Johnson saying “I know--but sometimes she act like ain't got time to pass the time of day with nobody ain’t been to college. Oh- I ain’t criticizing her none. It’s just-you know how some of our young people get when they just little education” ” (102). This conversation much stated that Beneatha did not care what any had to say about how ridiculous her dream was she would go to any measurement to achieve her goal regardless of what anyone had to say.
