Merton (1910-2003) had a central idea upon functional analysis, that society is a whole unit, made up of interrelated parts that work together (p15). Functionalism is represented twice in the film. Just like when her sister Pinky finds out the she has been sneaking out not to see boys, but to play in soccer games instead. She understands her sister so she helps her out by lying to their parents by saying that they are going to sleep over a cousins house when in reality Jess will be out playing a tournament out in Germany. Another example, is when Tony offers to marry Jess so that she could go off to the United States to keep on playing soccer. Social institution os the standard ways a society meets its basic needs and vitally affects your life. Three of the main sociological institutions that we discussed in classed are depicted in the movie are Family, Religion, Education. Family was represented with basic needs in the movie;an example’ would when Jess’s father confesses why he didn 't want her playing soccer was because of the pain he went through as a lad and not being able to play because of his turban. He didn 't want to see her go through some type of pain as he did so he did his best to protect her which was trying make her not play soccer anymore. Religion also plays a big part because in the movie they connect a lot to the paint of their God that dominates their living room wall. They are always praying to it for luck, blessing, or forgiveness. A norm in this situation would be ceremonies such as Pinky’s wedding were they wear traditional colorful clothing as well the bride is not suppose to smile on her wedding day. Lastly, education would be involved in our social institution. Although, Jess had the received her notice of acceptance to medical school which was her parents wishes; but, also received a scholar to Santa Clara University of California all thanks to her coach Joe. A value would be her being smart enough as well a hardworking student due to fact she got into medical school. Sums up the social institutions
