We live in a society where we face ethical dilemmas throughout our entire lives. Sometimes the dilemma might be minor, and other times the issue is life changing. How we choose to get through these life changing moments has a lot to do with our morals and worldview. The life of an unborn fetus is at the mercy of its mother, and an ethical dilemma of abortion will be examined from the perspective of the Christian worldview.
Ethical Dilemma
This case involves a woman named Susan who had not had success getting pregnant until recently. However, her excitement came to a halt when a blood test confirmed that her baby had Down syndrome and her doctor recommended she get an abortion. She was not certain if she wanted am abortion so she asked for advice from her good friend, who was also a professor of evolutionary biology, and recommended she get the abortion, but also let her know that it is her ultimate decision to make.
If Susan keeps the baby, she will be setting herself up for a long road of suffering for her and her baby. Children with Down syndrome require a lot of attention, love, and patience which will be difficult for Susan and her career. The fact that her child will be born with Down syndrome has put a halt to her happiness. She is now faced with the ultimate ethical dilemma of giving birth to a child with Down syndrome or getting an abortion. She needs to decide if she will stick to the Christian worldview and keep the baby and endure a lifetime of eternal love or kill her baby and lose out on the opportunity to become a mother. She does not want her baby to live a life of suffering, but that is not always the case with children with Down syndrome.
