For my Writing final project I did an analysis of the author Ben Mikaelsen. In my research I learned a lot about Ben Mikaelsen’s past and how it affected his writing style and his motivation for writing Touching Spirit Bear. It was interesting to learn that even though he didn't know how to read or write until he was around the age of 10, he became a well known author and won many awards for his books.

Ben Mikaelsen was born on December 8, 1952 in La Paz, Bolivia. He was one of six children in his family and his parent were very religious, but they barely had time for their kids, this made him and his siblings self reliant and adventurous. Ben Mikaelsen grew up with a pretty tough childhood and was bullied for being different from all

During this second set of readings, five authors caught my attention for their writing styles, historical relevance, relatability, creativity, and originality. During the first sets of readings after Barlow, Tecumseh and his speech “The White Men Are Not Friends to the Indians" caught my eye. Personally as a minority myself, I felt that I could relate to him to a slight degree and understand his perspective on his uphill battle against the Americans. I also felt that his speech itself was empowering because of the sense of unity and camaraderie he created with his words between the Indian people by using lines such as, "we must smoke the same pipe" (Tecumseh 517) and using their common spiritual beliefs and describing their relatable misfortunes caused by the Americans to create various bridges between the other tribes. However, I found Tecumseh 's situation as a whole tragic, since he died in battle leading his army against the Americans…

The biggest influence on me as a writer was the introduction to National Novel Writing Month, or NaNoWriMo. NaNoWriMo is a worldwide phenomenon based out of California. The basic idea is to give writers a chance to stretch themselves by challenging them to write fifty-thousand words in one month. As November approaches each year, novelists prepare to be antisocial and concentrate their brain power on hammering out a novel. From my first introduction to NaNoWriMo in 2013, I have participated twice and have yet to reach 50k.…

The event that had the most powerful impact on my literary development occurred during the summer of 2016.
