The company’s policy of the 5:1 salary ratio was inconsistent with the industry because they were overpaying the employees at the lower pay levels and were underpaying the people at the high pay levels, which in effect was causing issues in the recruitment of much-needed talent at the high level.

The value of Coherence:

Despite the issues, Ben & Jerry’s were particular about their core values and relied on them for their progress and growth. They showed conscious efforts to stick to their beliefs and make progress.

The Way Ahead:

Ben and Jerry’s had faced issues with the keeping up with the requirement of Vermont natural dairy ingredients, their following the people culture and setting up the scoop shops only in the cities, the variable cost structure and not being able to expand geographically whereas expanding too much in the product category.

In order to address these issues, they need to find the right balance between the choices they could make and the ones they cannot. After determining the choices, they must explore all the possibilities that can serve as the solution for the choices that they have made. Keeping the ultimate goal in mind and utilizing the current resources and willingness to innovate. They should carefully determine the parameters of success for them, as for Ben and Jerry the parameter for success was not just increasing the market shares but also to develop an environment which can provide value to the customers as well as to the employees.
