Belonging Strategies Essay

Students yearn for a sense of belonging in the classroom. There are several ways to strategies that can be incorporated into the classroom that will give students a sense of belonging. One strategy that I would like to incorporate into my classroom would be to start the first day of school off with an icebreaker game. This allows students the opportunity to get to know other students and make connections. Students would find that they can relate to some of their fellow peers. Another strategy would to have classroom jobs. Each week students could have a different job within the classroom. This strategy would promote a sense of belonging in the classroom because they play a role in making the classroom run efficiently. These jobs could include passing out papers, wiping down the desks at the end of the day, or even checking everyone’s planners at the end of the day.

Rather than the teacher grading our students, the students could grade themselves. Students could also write a reflection on their work. If students were to grade themselves and also write a reflection I think that they could see their progression, but also be able to pick up on things that they might need to work on. I know that when I take time to personally reflect on my own work I gain more insight as to just receiving a grade for my work. If I were to go a step further I think that an effective strategy would be to meet with students periodically and discus with them how they feel that they are doing and things that we could help them work on.
