Belk Library Ethnography

I chose Belk Library of Appalachian State University for my ethnography project. The reason that I pick library for this project was that I knew everyday men, women, children, elder, and people of different nation came to this place for studying, relaxing, or for some other reasons. Therefore, I thought by choosing library, I would have an opportunity to observe the behaviors of people of different genders, ages, and nation of this culture.
It was a great experience working as a cultural anthropologist. I mostly paid attention to the people’s behavior and how they were dressed. In addition, I also focused on the environment and objects surrounding by it. After observing people in the library for one hour and seeing many patterns I thought it was acceptable to make some conclusions about this culture. Today there were not many children or elders in the library. The library had many computers for students and community members to use. Almost everyone in the library were either using library computers or their own laptops that they brought with them for studying, entertaining, networking, or

Their legs were showing off. I saw a woman who was wearing a crop top that showed off her stomach. Women seemed comfortable in their shorts. But what surprised me the most was that no man was shocked to see women bare legs and stomach. They were treating the women in shorts the same way they were treating a women in long pants. In many Middle East Asian countries, it is not acceptable for women to wear shorts, and women who shows of their body are not treated well. Hence, I concluded that in this culture it was admissible for women to wear shorts. It is tolerated well by their community. I also heard a woman laughing loud. And no one looked at her rudely or stared at her because she was laughing loud in the presence of men. Therefore, for this culture it is not consider unacceptable for a woman to laugh loud in

Long before Melvile Dewey came around and implemented his decimal system, personal library collections typically were curated and and managed to some degree by men. Considering that the form of public libraries that gave rise to the ones we have today, did not come into existence until the mid to late 19th century, it is surprising that women were allowed into these institutions. However, even from the birth of the field of librarianship, women had to assert their right to be there. In order to turn the spotlight and focus on women’s achievements in the library field, I will be targeting women from different time periods. These women include Mary Cutler Fairchild, Regina Andrews, Dorothy Porter Wesley, Henriette Avram, Marcia Bates, Carla Hayden.…

arbara Percival In Preparation of an AFL-CIO Exhibit This past semester, I conducted my field study within the setting of an academic library working with the university archivists at the Hornbake Library at the University of Maryland (UMD). Due to unforeseen circumstances, my field study had to be cobbled together rather quickly and therefore consists of a patchwork. For example, there have been two projects in my field study with two different supervisors in two different departments.…

The first ethnography I studied and read was "In Search of Respect: Selling Crack in El Barrio " by Philippe Bourgois. In this novel, the sociologist submerged himself in the culture he was studying to find the answers to his hypothesis and questions. I found this the most interesting way to conduct research. I enjoyed reading about his interactions with the communities and seeing his relationships with the subjects develop. Additionally, I found it interesting to see how an outsider could submerge into a culture so different from his own.…

In E.B. White’s correspondence to the Children of Troy, he states the following: “A library is many things. It 's a place to go, to get in out of the rain. It 's a place to go if you want to sit and think. But particularly it is a place where books live, and where you can get in touch with other people, and other thoughts, through books” (“Letters to the Children of Troy”). Libraries customarily serve as providers of vast arrays of knowledge, provoking introspection and musing enabling the creation of original notions serving as a haven for independent thought, but also as an area to exchange knowledge.…

Ethnographic Interview Project I decided to interview my grandma, Doris Boggs, for my interview project. She lives in Fort Wayne, Indiana and because of the five hour distance I rarely get to spend time with her. When my grandfather, her husband, passed away last spring I realized how little I knew about them and when we received this project I thought it would be the perfect way to preserve some of the important things from her life. She was born Dorris Mae Deiter on November 26, 1927.…

Case studies Many cases in the literature have utilized CT imaging to address bioarchaeological questions; however, predominately they focus on mummification studies, with only a few cases in reference to bone specifically. One such case was in the article Non-invasive Archaeology of Skeletal Material by CT scanning and Three-dimensional Reconstruction by Lynnerup et al. (1997). In this case the skeletal remains are of a very fragile and delicate 7000 year old ancient Sumerian skeleton that was recovered in a block, preserving its soil matrix.…

The article that was reviewed was about Amy Vetter, who was a teacher that was shifting roles in the school she was working at. During this study Vetter (2012) reluctantly began the process of moving into a leadership role to bring about change in her colleagues teaching practices (p. 27-28). The type of qualitative research study was a combination of three different qualitative methods. These qualitative methods described by MacMillan (2016) are: “ethnographic studies” (p. 311), “phenomenological studies” (p. 317) and “grounded theory studies” (p. 318). Vetter (2012) participated in an “ethnographic study” (MacMillan, 2016, p. 311) because she was working with two distinct cultures in her school.…

The Churchill Room A mini-ethnographic essay Introduction There is no doubt that ethnographic studies can vary in terms of scope, details presented, audience targeted, researching skills of the writer, objectives aimed at and several other associated motives. Primarily aiming at acquiring the benefits of developing what Clifford Geertz calls as “thick description” in his book The Interpretation of Cultures (1993), this essay will examine the daily activities in a public space called the Churchill Room at Goodenough College in London. The Churchill Room is a massive room with a high curved roof and beautifully decorated walls in Goodenough College. Moreover, its shiny floor, partly covered by laterally organised wooden…

One major way school libraries have changed over the last 100 years is the actual use of the library space. In the beginning, libraries were created to house a collection of books and provide a space for students to read. Eventually there was a need to provide students with a space to read and a space for activities. According to The School Library Manager, “the activities were rapidly outgrowing a single reading room, and new facilities were being built that included a librarian’s office or workroom”…

The way we view or portray women in a male dominated society is linked with a variety of places such as families, cultures, society and media. Women are symbolized as sex objects according to men. Magazines and posters all portray women with either minimal cloths or no clothes and are either shown with a romantic twist or being raped. It is the society that shows women as sex objects especially in the minds of men. Sanders proves this point in his essay, “The swains who gathered to admire my roommate’s gallery discussed the pinups in the same tones and in much the same language as the farmers back home in Ohio used for assessing cows.”…

    Careers In Anthropology

The video on careers in anthropology highlighted the great diversity within the field that many people may be unaware of. While years ago most anthropologists were employed by colleges and universities, recently more and more anthropologists are being placed in other positions as there are not enough opportunities in institutions of education for all of the anthropologists that are being trained. These jobs include many positions that involve working with governments of every level, working in museums, and in forensics. While the field has been and is being diversified, colleges and universities are still major sources of employment for anthropologists. Teaching classes is the primary of these professionals, but community service, research, and publication are also included in their responsibilities.…

We have learned that an idealistic library is the place where you go when you want to learn something new, use its free resources and when in need of silence. On most college campuses a library is known for being a place for independent academic study and not an environment in which you should talk to others. College students that are found inside libraries participating in their own independent studies are usually there because they want to be there, not because they are highly persuaded to be there by coaches. However most students I noticed that attend Siena Heights University, do not fully take advantage of the library resources, and commonly talk to one another, the main reason for this is because most of the students that are in the library…
