The novel I will be talking about is Bel Canto. I will be talking about the book’s identity, the author, and the context of the work. A detailed summary of the novel will be reveal later on. I will also talk about my experience of reading the book and my emotions on it. There will also of recommendations of why people should read it and reasons. This review is for people who did not read the novel. But also will convince the readers to read the novel, Bel Canto. This is the book’s identity and the context. The novel is called Bel Canto, which is Italian for “beautiful singing” or “beautiful song.” The author is Ann Patchett. The genre is romance, fantasy, and political thriller. Bel Canto was published in May 2001 and the publisher is the Harper Perennial, an imprint of Harper Collins Publishers. The intended audience is teens and adults who are into musical style of a book. Bel Canto is Ann Patchett’s most recent novel. Her book was the winner of the PEN/Faulkner Award. The novel also won the Orange prize, become a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award and Book Sense Book of the Year. Here are some major characters and their roles in the story. Katsumi Hosokawa, the main protagonist of the story. Mr. Hosokawa is the CEO of the largest company, Nansei. He is a successful loyal businessman but he is also has an obsession with opera. Roxanne Coss is the opera diva who is hired to sing at Mr. Hosokawa’s party. Her sweet dulcet voice made her the most likable person in the story. Carmen is one of the two female terrorists. She is a curious character that learns new things throughout the story. Gen Watanabe is Mr. Hosokawa’s translator. He has the ability to speak most languages like Japanese, English, Spanish, Russian, French, Germany, Polish and many more.
