Bekah’s Journey of Personal Growth Four months after I was born, my family went to the animal shelter and met a beautiful, quiet mutt. She was young, but fully housetrained. Her coat a brilliant red, her body short and oblong. She looked much like a hot dog with four legs. I grew up my entire life with her. We helped each other survive out individual hardships. For instance, when I came home from school in a near panic attack state, she would never leave my side. Or, when she had to have her deformed leg amputated, I made sure to keep her comfortable and safe. She was my mute best friend for the first thirteen years of my life. When she suddenly died two and a half years ago, I had a long and hardy struggle accepting her absence. Her untimely death kickstarted the hardest transition of my young lifetime. For nearly a year, I fell into a diagnosed depression. No longer could she be there for me. I had lost my rock, and …show more content…

They told me that I “wasn’t ready,” or that “the stress of a new dog would just make the situation worse.” Although I understood where they were coming from, I was not happy with their decision. So, life went on. Things did not improve and my mental health was not sublime. For many more months, no progress was made. My hopes for a new pet were always high, but not reciprocated. At least, that’s what I had thought. On November 20, 2014, my parents woke me from a deep nap. “We have a surprise,” they had said. They told me to follow

The Biography of a Blind Beagle “Winnie, where are you going?” This is a question that rings throughout my house at least twice a day as my dog wanders aimlessly around. What began as my little old beagle staring up at the bright lights in our kitchen ceiling as if there was something more fascinating up there than just small glowing light bulbs, led our sweet rescue to be diagnosed with Sudden Acquired Retinal Degeneration Syndrome, also known as S.A.R.D.S., less than a week after the onset of her newfound light bulb fetish- hence the word “Sudden”. ***** Three years later, there is still never a day where I do not walk downstairs to see Winnie facing the wall. I had just gotten back from school when my world began to crumble around me. It was a Friday, so like any other kid who had just suffered through an entire week of excruciating labor, I was very excited to kick back and relax. Still in my school uniform, I plop onto my bed and pull out my phone. Maybe I’ll watch another episode of Lost, I think to myself, unaware that my life would change forever in the coming hours.…

The reason I have an individualistic mindset is because, my parents divorced when I was 3 years old, my mom wasn’t much of a factor in my life. I’ve seen my mom and step dad as alcoholics and some drug related issues. Living weekends in Wilmington California which for a white kid isn’t the most comfortable place to be. First, we lived in a motel for about a year and a half eating microwaved tortillas with butter, dry ramen noodles, mayo and bread, and on fancy occasions we would have canned taco meat with rice, beans, lettuce and hot sauce from jack in the box. We then moved into a shack one street over from the motel that was maybe 750 square.…
