The job of managers is to find the right balance between the conflicting viewpoints. Some of the Paradoxes explained in book are I. Managers are responsible for the work of others. You success depends on how effectively other do their job. Just being directive, managers cannot get work done by her team II. Managers doesn’t manage the work, but they get the work done by influencing the people who do work III. Development and Evaluation are conflicting responsibilities. Mangers are expected to do both. IV. Develop a team in to a cohesive unit and at the same time develop the individuals of the team V. Managers are expected to manage the group and at the same time influence larger organization to create conditions needed for the group’s success VI. Focus on Today and Tomorrow – This includes trade-offs due to the scarcity of resources VII. Execute and Innovate - Todays Mangers are responsible for not just steady execution but also change and innovate VIII. Managers must sometimes do harm in order to do a greater good – These decisions come with ethical dilemmas that can create personal anguish
Above paradoxes define the complex nature of Management. All Managers need to realize that there are no rights or wrong answers for these paradoxes; it is always a matter of judgment. Once you realize that these paradoxes are inherent part of your job, it becomes easy to appreciate the need
