People are living in a technological world where everyone is always engaging in communication but the art of conversation is being sacrificed for weak connections. At work, the executives text to others all the time. At school, students use Facebook, Twitter and Instagram during classes. Back at home, families are sitting together reading e-mails and texting instead of talking to each other. The little devices that all people carry around have the capability of not just changing what they do but also who they are. Technology is so enabling that people have the capability of being elsewhere and being with anyone but still can connect wherever they want to be. People’s lives are so customized because the only thing they highly regard is their own control over the identities they advertise to the world. They can have two selves that one is in the real world, and the other is in the cyber world, which means they can hide the parts that they do not want other people to see. As Turkle suggests in “Alone Together”, the creation of virtual intimacy has degraded people’s experience of the other kind and all the encounters of any kind. Like Turkle, Gladwell argues in “Small Change: Why the revolution will not be tweeted”, the reality world and social media or cyber space are different. His fear is that people have refrained from conversations and interactions that involve face-to-face communication.
